OBD-II fault code

P0C77: Hybrid/EV Battery System Precharge Time Too Short

What it means

The hybrid/EV battery system precharge time is shorter than the calibrated limit. The code indicates an abnormal precharge-time result; its cause depends on the vehicle.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Before connecting the HV battery to the vehicle's DC link, the precharge circuit gradually brings the link voltage closer to battery voltage. The control system monitors this interval, and this code sets when precharge completes faster than its calibrated minimum, which can indicate an abnormal DC-link or charge-resistor condition.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Short on DC-link
  2. Charge resistor shorted
  3. Pack cell imbalance approaching service threshold

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and related HV codes with a hybrid-capable scan tool to identify the conditions during the short precharge event.
  2. Review live battery and DC-link voltage information with the manufacturer's diagnostic routine to check for abnormal initial voltage or rapid change.
  3. Inspect accessible low-voltage precharge-control connectors and wiring for loose fit, corrosion, or damage.
  4. Have the HV DC-link circuit checked for a short and the precharge charge-resistor path tested using the manufacturer's safety procedure.
  5. If those circuits pass, have battery cell balance evaluated with the specified diagnostic equipment.

Common fixes

  • Repair a damaged connector or low-voltage wire in the precharge control circuit.
  • Repair a confirmed DC-link short using the manufacturer's HV procedures.
  • Replace a charge resistor that fails its specified test.
  • Address a confirmed pack cell imbalance through the manufacturer's battery service procedure.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving or charging if an HV warning, reduced power, or charging fault is present; abnormal precharge can affect safe connection of the battery to the DC link. Do not open or probe HV components, and arrange prompt diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
