OBD-II fault code

P0B30: Hybrid/EV Battery D Voltage Unstable

What it means

The voltage measurement of HV battery D fluctuates beyond the expected window. Loose connection or unstable cell.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The battery control system tracks the voltage of hybrid/EV battery D and checks whether that reading remains stable. This code sets when battery D's measured voltage fluctuates beyond its expected window, which can happen with a loose connection, a cell with unstable internal resistance, or an imbalance in that section.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Loose busbar or terminal connection
  2. Cell with unstable internal resistance
  3. Pack cell imbalance approaching service threshold

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and review battery D voltage alongside neighboring sections to identify whether the fluctuation occurred during acceleration, charging, or another load change.
  2. With the vehicle powered down, inspect accessible low-voltage battery D sense wiring and connectors for looseness, chafing, or corrosion; do not open the high-voltage pack or handle busbars.
  3. Use a scan tool to graph battery D voltage and compare it with neighboring sections while reproducing the relevant operating condition, if safe to do so.
  4. Have a qualified hybrid technician inspect the battery D connection and busbar area using the manufacturer's high-voltage isolation procedure.
  5. If connections are secure, have the affected cell group tested for unstable internal resistance and imbalance.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose or damaged low-voltage sense-wire connector for battery D.
  • Have a qualified hybrid technician clean or secure a confirmed loose battery D busbar or terminal connection.
  • Repair damaged battery D voltage-sense wiring.
  • Service or replace the affected battery module if testing confirms an unstable cell or imbalance.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid hard acceleration, towing, and long trips if the warning is active or power is reduced, because voltage instability can trigger limp mode or interrupt charging. Seek prompt diagnosis and do not access high-voltage connections yourself.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
