OBD-II fault code

P0AF7: 14 Volt Power Module Internal Temperature Too High

What it means

The 14V DC/DC converter module reports internal temperature above the protection threshold. Sustained load or cooling failure.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The 14-volt power module contains the DC/DC converter that supplies and maintains the vehicle’s low-voltage electrical system from the hybrid system. P0AF7 sets when the module reports an internal temperature above its protection threshold, which can follow sustained electrical load or high ambient temperature and may cause it to limit output.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sustained high module load
  2. Ambient temperature too high

Symptoms

  • Hybrid-system warning light may illuminate
  • Reduced power or limited hybrid operation
  • Charging or electrical accessories may be limited

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and live module temperature and charging data to see whether the high temperature followed sustained electrical demand or occurred under ordinary conditions.
  2. Check for related hybrid-system or charging codes and note any accessory or charging limitations that appeared at the same time.
  3. Inspect the 14-volt power module’s accessible cooling paths and surrounding area for blocked airflow, debris, or signs of heat damage.
  4. Check the low-voltage charging system and module operation using the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure to identify excessive load or inadequate cooling.
  5. If the temperature rises again under normal conditions, test the module and its cooling system against the manufacturer’s specification.

Common fixes

  • Remove debris obstructing the module’s specified cooling path.
  • Reduce unnecessary electrical accessory load while the system is hot.
  • Repair a cooling-system fault identified by the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure.
  • Repair or replace the 14-volt power module if it overheats under normal operating conditions and fails testing.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid heavy electrical loads and strenuous driving until the module cools and the cause is checked; power or accessory charging may be limited. If the vehicle displays a shutdown warning or loses electrical functions, stop safely and arrange service.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
