What it means
The control circuit of the HV battery negative contactor reports a control circuit range/performance condition. HV main switching cannot be commanded reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The negative contactor connects the battery pack to the high-voltage system when the vehicle is ready to operate. The control module monitors the contactor’s control response, and P0ADE sets when that response is outside the expected range or does not match the command. The pack may then be unable to switch high voltage reliably.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Coil resistance drifted
- High-resistance contact
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and hybrid-system live data to see when the negative-contactor command or feedback first went out of range.
- With the vehicle safely powered down, inspect the negative-contactor control connector and harness for corrosion, looseness, heat damage, or pin problems.
- Check the contactor coil and control-circuit continuity and resistance against the manufacturer's specification.
- Measure voltage drop across the negative-contactor circuit connections while following the vehicle's service procedure to find high resistance.
- If wiring and coil measurements are within specification, compare commanded and reported contactor operation with a capable scan tool to assess the contactor feedback element or control module.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure a corroded or loose negative-contactor connector.
- Repair damaged wiring or a high-resistance control-circuit connection.
- Replace the negative contactor if its coil or feedback element is outside specification.
- Repair the control module or its connection only if circuit tests confirm the fault is there.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid relying on the vehicle for routine or long-distance driving; reduced power, limp mode, or failure to enter Ready mode may occur. Have the hybrid system checked promptly, since unreliable high-voltage switching can also prevent charging.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
