What it means
The control module detects an intermittent or erratic signal in the hybrid battery voltage isolation sensor circuit.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The hybrid battery voltage isolation sensor sends an electrical-isolation signal to the control module. This intermittent/erratic code sets when that signal changes unpredictably or drops in and out, pointing toward an unstable connection, wiring fault, ground problem, or sensor fault rather than a steady low or high reading.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Intermittent wiring or connector fault
- Sensor fault
- Poor ground or connection
Symptoms
- Hybrid system warning light
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and code status to identify when the isolation-sensor signal became erratic and whether vibration, temperature, or other faults coincided.
- Monitor live isolation-sensor data during the manufacturer's prescribed checks to see whether the reading jumps or cuts out.
- With the vehicle safely powered down according to service information, inspect the sensor connector, accessible harness, and grounds for looseness, corrosion, chafing, or moisture.
- Check for intermittent opens, shorts, and poor ground connections in the sensor circuit using the manufacturer's procedure.
- Have a qualified hybrid technician test the isolation sensor and circuit stability against the manufacturer's specification, without probing high-voltage terminals.
- If the sensor and wiring remain stable, test the control module input and grounds as specified.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure a loose or corroded isolation-sensor connector.
- Repair chafed wiring or an intermittent ground in the sensor circuit.
- Replace the isolation sensor if its signal remains erratic with stable wiring and connections.
- Repair or replace the control module only if its input or ground checks fail.
Can I keep driving?
Intermittent hybrid operation can become limited or unavailable without warning, so avoid long trips until the cause is found. Have a qualified hybrid technician inspect the circuit and do not handle high-voltage components.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
