OBD-II fault code

P0A92: Hybrid Generator Performance

What it means

The control module detects that hybrid generator performance is outside its expected range.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The hybrid generator converts engine or drivetrain power into electrical energy for the hybrid system. The control module monitors generator output and related operating data, and sets P0A92 when generator performance is outside its expected range, which can reduce the energy available for hybrid assist or battery charging.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Generator fault
  2. Generator wiring or high-voltage connection fault
  3. Generator control or inverter fault

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or hybrid-system warning light
  • Reduced hybrid power
  • Poor fuel economy

How to diagnose it

  1. Capture freeze-frame data and review generator output and commanded operating data in live hybrid-system readings to see under what conditions performance falls short.
  2. Check for related generator, inverter, high-voltage battery, and engine codes that may explain the output problem.
  3. Following the manufacturer's high-voltage safety procedure, inspect accessible generator wiring and connectors for damage, poor seating, or heat marks.
  4. Test generator wiring and feedback signals, then compare measured output with the manufacturer's specification under the prescribed conditions.
  5. If the generator circuits pass, use hybrid-system diagnostics to distinguish a generator fault from an inverter or control fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or loose generator wiring and connectors.
  • Correct a related inverter or control fault affecting generator output.
  • Repair or replace the generator if testing confirms it cannot meet the manufacturer's specification.
  • Repair or replace the inverter if diagnostic results isolate its generator control section.

Can I keep driving?

Drive gently and avoid long or demanding trips because reduced generator output can lower hybrid power and worsen fuel economy. Stop if the hybrid warning is accompanied by a major loss of propulsion or a shutdown warning.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
