OBD-II fault code

P0941: Hydraulic Oil Temperature Sensor Circuit Intermittent

What it means

The hydraulic oil temperature sensor reports a circuit intermittent fault. Oil temperature feedback for hydraulic system is unreliable.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The hydraulic oil temperature sensor measures the fluid temperature for the hydraulic system, and the transmission control module (TCM) uses its signal to manage operation as the fluid warms or cools. P0941 sets when that sensor's circuit signal cuts in and out, making the temperature feedback unreliable.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Connector not seated
  2. Noisy ground reference
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live hydraulic oil temperature readings for sudden dropouts or implausible jumps that suggest an intermittent signal.
  2. Inspect the temperature sensor connector for a loose fit, backed-out pins, corrosion, or damaged seals.
  3. Trace the sensor wiring and ground connections for chafing, loose terminals, or signs of movement-related damage.
  4. With live data or a suitable meter, gently move the harness and connector while watching for the temperature reading to cut out.
  5. If the fault remains, test the sensor circuit and ground against the manufacturer's specification to distinguish a sensor fault from a wiring or module issue.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect and secure the hydraulic oil temperature sensor connector.
  • Repair loose, damaged, or corroded sensor wiring and ground connections.
  • Replace a faulty temperature sensor if its signal fails testing.
  • Repair the affected circuit or module connection if testing identifies an intermittent fault there.

Can I keep driving?

Drive cautiously only if shifts remain predictable; an intermittent temperature signal can lead to harsh or delayed shifts or limp mode. Avoid towing or hard acceleration, and stop if the transmission slips, shudders badly, or loses drive.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
