OBD-II fault code

P0919: Gear Shift Position Control Error

What it means

The TCM detects that the gear shift actuator does not reach the commanded position within tolerance. Mechanical bind or actuator weakness.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The gear shift position control system moves the shift mechanism to the position requested by the TCM. P0919 sets when the module detects that the mechanism does not reach the commanded position within its allowed tolerance, which can point to binding or an actuator that has lost force.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Mechanism binding
  2. Actuator force degraded

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare commanded with reported shift position to identify the gear change the system failed to complete.
  2. Check transmission live data during a commanded shift for a position mismatch, timeout, or repeated unsuccessful movement.
  3. Inspect the shift mechanism and linkage for obstruction, damage, looseness, or binding across the range of movement.
  4. Inspect the actuator connector and wiring for damage or poor contact that could reduce actuator operation.
  5. If the mechanism and wiring are clear, test actuator operation and force against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Remove an obstruction or repair binding in the shift mechanism or linkage.
  • Repair loose linkage or actuator mounting that prevents full travel.
  • Restore damaged actuator wiring or connector contacts.
  • Replace the actuator if it cannot move the mechanism as specified.

Can I keep driving?

Do not continue driving if the transmission cannot reach or hold the commanded gear, or if it slips during shifts; arrange recovery. Repeated failed shifts can increase wear and may leave the vehicle in limp mode or unable to move.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
