OBD-II fault code

P0886: TCM Power Relay Control Circuit Low

What it means

The transmission control module monitors the electrical control circuit for its power relay. It sets this code when the circuit voltage is below the expected range.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The TCM power relay switches electrical power to the transmission control system, and the TCM monitors the relay's control circuit. P0886 sets when that circuit reads lower than the expected range, which can happen if the control wire is grounded or the relay coil or connector is faulty.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Control wire shorted to ground
  2. Internal short in coil
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check transmission live data for relay commands or supply faults to see when the low reading occurs.
  2. Inspect the TCM power relay, its connector, and the control wire for corrosion, damaged insulation, pin push-back, or a wire contacting ground.
  3. With the circuit diagram for the vehicle, check whether the relay coil and control wire have continuity or an unintended path to ground.
  4. Measure the control circuit while the relay is commanded and compare the reading with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If wiring and connections pass, test the relay coil and TCM control output according to the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose relay-control connector pins.
  • Repair a control wire shorted to ground.
  • Replace a relay with a shorted or failed coil.
  • Repair the TCM control circuit if testing confirms an internal fault.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid long trips if shifts are harsh or delayed, or the transmission enters limp mode; a low relay-control signal can interrupt transmission control. Stop somewhere safe if the vehicle slips or cannot select gears reliably.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
