OBD-II fault code

P0857: Traction Control Input Signal Range/Performance

What it means

The traction control input signal to the ECM reports a input signal range/performance condition. Engine torque reduction during wheel slip cannot be commanded reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The traction-control input conveys a torque-reduction request to the engine control module. This code sets when the signal is present but its value or behavior is implausible, such as when it disagrees with wheel-speed or traction-control data.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. TCS signal implausible vs. wheel speeds
  2. Module calibration off
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and scan the ABS/traction-control and engine modules for wheel-speed, calibration, or communication codes.
  2. Compare live traction-control request data with wheel speeds and system status to identify when the input becomes implausible.
  3. Inspect relevant module connectors and wiring for damage or poor contact that could distort the signal.
  4. Check wheel-speed sensor readings and the traction-control signal path using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
  5. If the hardware checks pass, verify module calibration and configuration are correct for the vehicle before replacing components.

Common fixes

  • Repair a poor connection or damaged wire affecting the traction-control input.
  • Correct a wheel-speed sensor or related fault that makes the traction-control data implausible.
  • Update or correct module calibration when the manufacturer's information identifies it as applicable.
  • Replace a failed sensor or module only after signal and calibration checks isolate it.

Can I keep driving?

Traction control torque reduction may be unreliable, and the transmission may limit operation. Use extra caution on wet, icy, or loose surfaces, and avoid driving if shifting becomes harsh, slipping, or otherwise unpredictable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
