OBD-II fault code

P080D: Upshift/Skip Shift Solenoid Control Circuit High

What it means

The upshift/skip-shift solenoid control circuit signal is above the expected level. The code does not identify the specific electrical cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The upshift or skip-shift solenoid control circuit carries the TCM’s command to operate a gearbox shift interlock. P080D sets when the monitored signal is higher than expected, which may result from voltage on the control wire or an open solenoid coil. The code identifies a high circuit condition, not the exact failed part.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Control wire shorted to battery voltage
  2. Open solenoid coil
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and scan transmission live data for the skip-shift command and related codes to see when the high signal is detected.
  2. Inspect the solenoid connector and harness for damaged insulation, loose pins, corrosion, or contact with a power feed.
  3. Check the control wire for a short to battery voltage and for an open connection, following the manufacturer's isolation procedure.
  4. Test the skip-shift solenoid coil and compare the results with the manufacturer's specification to check for an open coil.
  5. If the circuit and coil pass, verify TCM power, grounds, and output operation before suspecting a module fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair a control wire shorted to battery voltage or an open in the harness.
  • Repair corroded, loose, or damaged connector terminals.
  • Replace the skip-shift solenoid if its coil is open or outside the manufacturer's specification.
  • Repair a TCM output fault only after confirming the circuit and solenoid.

Can I keep driving?

Drive only if the transmission shifts reliably, and avoid hard acceleration or demanding gear changes. If it slips, shudders, or becomes stuck in a gear, stop driving and have the fault diagnosed promptly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
