OBD-II fault code

P0736: Reverse Incorrect Ratio

What it means

The transmission control module detected an incorrect ratio while reverse was commanded or expected. The code alone does not identify the cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The TCM compares transmission speed signals with the ratio expected when reverse is commanded. P0736 sets when the measured ratio is outside the allowed range during reverse operation; it does not identify whether the cause is a solenoid, hydraulic fault, or worn reverse clutch or band.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Shift solenoid stuck
  2. Reverse clutch/band worn

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and related transmission codes, and note whether reverse engagement was delayed or the vehicle failed to move.
  2. Check transmission fluid level and condition using the vehicle's specified procedure, since low or degraded fluid can affect reverse engagement.
  3. With the vehicle safely secured, inspect shift-solenoid wiring and connectors for damage, corrosion, or loose contact.
  4. Compare commanded reverse with live input and output speed data during a brief, controlled reverse engagement.
  5. Test the solenoid circuit and hydraulic pressure against the manufacturer's specification, then investigate the reverse clutch or band if electrical and pressure checks pass.

Common fixes

  • Correct low fluid or service degraded fluid according to the vehicle's requirements.
  • Repair damaged shift-solenoid wiring or connector contacts.
  • Replace a shift solenoid if testing confirms it is stuck or electrically faulty.
  • Repair a confirmed valve-body or hydraulic pressure fault affecting reverse.
  • Repair the reverse clutch or band if internal wear is confirmed.

Can I keep driving?

Do not rely on the vehicle for manoeuvring if reverse engagement is delayed, slips, or fails; avoid operating it where reversing is necessary and arrange prompt diagnosis. Repeated attempts to engage reverse can overheat the fluid and worsen internal damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
