OBD-II fault code

P0732: Gear 2 Incorrect Ratio

What it means

The transmission control module detected an incorrect ratio while second gear was commanded or expected. The code alone does not confirm slipping or identify the cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The TCM checks second gear by comparing transmission speed signals with the ratio expected when second gear is commanded. P0732 sets when the measured ratio falls outside the allowed range for second gear.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. 2nd gear clutch pack worn
  2. Line pressure low

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and related transmission codes to see when second gear was commanded and the ratio fault appeared.
  2. Check transmission fluid level and condition by the specified procedure, as low fluid can interfere with the pressure needed to apply second gear.
  3. Inspect the input and output speed-sensor wiring and connectors for damage, corrosion, or loose contact.
  4. Compare commanded gear with live speed data during a controlled shift into second gear, noting whether the mismatch is repeatable.
  5. Test the sensor circuits and line pressure against the manufacturer's specification, then assess the second-gear clutch pack if the electrical readings and pressure are sound.

Common fixes

  • Correct low fluid or service degraded fluid according to the vehicle requirements.
  • Repair damaged speed-sensor wiring or connector contacts.
  • Replace a sensor only if its signal test confirms a fault.
  • Repair a confirmed low-pressure condition or valve-body fault.
  • Repair the second-gear clutch pack if internal wear is confirmed.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid hard acceleration, towing, and continued driving if the transmission slips or shudders as it shifts into second; have it diagnosed soon. A slipping second-gear clutch can overheat the fluid and cause more extensive transmission damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
