What it means
The transmission output speed sensor signal is implausible compared to vehicle speed and gear ratio. Sometimes set together with VSS or input-speed-sensor codes.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The output speed sensor reports transmission output-shaft speed so the control module can compare it with vehicle speed and expected gear ratios. P0721 sets when the signal is present but falls outside the range or performance the module expects, rather than simply disappearing.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Output speed sensor failed
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
- Sensor mounting loose - signal damping
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and graph live output speed alongside vehicle speed and input speed to see when their relationship becomes implausible.
- Check for related vehicle-speed or input-speed sensor codes that could explain a mismatch before focusing on the output sensor alone.
- Inspect the output speed sensor connector, harness, and mounting for corrosion, chafing, looseness, or damage that could distort the reading.
- During a safe road test, watch whether output speed changes smoothly and consistently with vehicle speed and gear changes.
- Test the output speed sensor and circuit against the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification to distinguish sensor drift from wiring or mounting problems.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose output speed sensor and restore its correct mounting.
- Clean or repair corroded or loose sensor connector terminals.
- Repair damaged wiring that causes an unstable or inaccurate signal.
- Replace the output speed sensor if its signal remains outside the manufacturer's specification.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving if shifts are harsh or the transmission enters limp mode, since continued operation with an implausible speed reading can worsen shifting behavior. Avoid towing or hard acceleration until diagnosed.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
