OBD-II fault code

P0684: Glow Plug Control Module to PCM Communication Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The PCM has detected a communication signal from the glow plug control module that is outside expected range or performance. The code does not identify the cause by itself.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The glow plug control module manages the heating elements that warm a diesel engine’s cylinders for cold starts, while the PCM monitors its communication signal. P0684 sets when that signal’s range or performance is outside what the PCM expects; it does not by itself show whether the module or its wiring is at fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Communication wiring or connector fault
  2. Glow plug control module fault
  3. PCM fault

Symptoms

  • Glow plug warning light on (often orange coil symbol)
  • Hard cold start or no start in cold weather
  • White smoke from exhaust during warm-up

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check for related glow-plug or communication codes to see when the fault occurred and whether it affects other cylinders or systems.
  2. Use a scan tool to check whether the PCM can communicate with the glow plug control module and whether the module reports a fault.
  3. Inspect the module connectors and communication wiring for loose, damaged, corroded, or chafed sections.
  4. Check the module’s power and ground connections under the conditions specified by the manufacturer.
  5. Test the communication circuit and module operation using the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure before considering a PCM fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged communication wiring or connector terminals.
  • Clean and secure loose or corroded module connections.
  • Replace a glow plug control module that fails the specified tests.
  • Repair or replace the PCM only after its power, ground, wiring, and communication circuit have been verified.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine starts and runs normally, limit driving and address the fault soon; cold starting may become difficult, and warm-up smoke may increase. Avoid relying on the vehicle in cold weather if starting is already unreliable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
