OBD-II fault code

P0681: Cylinder 11 Glow Plug Circuit

What it means

The glow plug circuit for cylinder 11 has a detected fault. The code does not by itself identify whether the cause is the plug, wiring, or control module.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The glow plug in cylinder 11 heats the air in that cylinder to aid cold diesel starting. The control module switches power to the plug and monitors its circuit for an electrical fault; this code identifies a problem in the cylinder 11 circuit but does not by itself distinguish a failed plug, wiring fault, or control-module fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Failed glow plug
  2. Open or shorted wiring or poor connector contact
  3. Glow plug control module fault

Symptoms

  • Glow plug warning light on (often orange coil symbol)
  • Hard cold start or no start in cold weather
  • White smoke from exhaust during warm-up

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data, glow plug status, and other cylinder-specific codes to see whether the fault is isolated to cylinder 11.
  2. With the engine off and cool, inspect the cylinder 11 glow plug connector and harness for looseness, corrosion, damage, or chafing.
  3. Test the cylinder 11 glow plug and its wiring for continuity or shorts using the manufacturer's procedure.
  4. Compare cylinder 11 circuit readings and control-module output with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the plug and harness test correctly, check the glow plug control module and its power and ground connections.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure the cylinder 11 glow plug connector.
  • Repair damaged or corroded cylinder 11 wiring.
  • Replace the cylinder 11 glow plug if testing shows it has failed.
  • Repair or replace the glow plug control module if its cylinder 11 output is faulty.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs normally, driving may be possible, but cold starts can be difficult and white smoke or rough running may occur during warm-up. Avoid repeated long cranking, which can drain the battery and strain the starter.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
