OBD-II fault code

P0633: Immobiliser Key Not Programmed

What it means

The immobilizer key code is not programmed in the control module. The code does not by itself establish that the key is rejected or that starting is inhibited.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The immobilizer system checks whether a key's security code is recognised by the vehicle's control module before allowing the engine to start. P0633 means the module reports that the immobilizer key code is not programmed; it does not by itself prove the key has been rejected or that starting is currently blocked.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Key not programmed to vehicle
  2. Immobiliser module fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Possible limp mode or no-start
  • Multiple follow-up faults across modules
  • Reset/relearn may be needed after repair

How to diagnose it

  1. Record the code and scan the engine and immobilizer modules for key-recognition, communication, and low-voltage faults.
  2. Check whether the security indicator behaves as expected and whether the vehicle starts with another already-programmed key.
  3. Inspect the key, ignition-area antenna or reader connections, and immobilizer-module connectors for damage, loose contacts, or interference from nearby devices.
  4. Confirm whether a key or control module was recently replaced, and verify which keys the immobilizer currently recognises with a compatible scan tool.
  5. Follow the manufacturer's key-learning procedure to program the correct key or restore module configuration, then confirm the engine starts reliably.

Common fixes

  • Program the vehicle's key using the manufacturer's approved immobilizer procedure.
  • Replace a damaged key with a compatible key and program it to the vehicle.
  • Repair a loose or damaged immobilizer reader or module connection.
  • Repair or replace a confirmed faulty immobilizer module and complete required key programming.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle starts reliably and the security light is off, drive only as needed to arrange repair because the fault may leave you unable to restart it. If it will not start or the security system is actively rejecting the key, do not keep cycling the starter.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
