What it means
The control circuit for the generator field terminal (F) reports a fault. The ECM cannot regulate field current as expected.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The generator F terminal carries the field-control signal used to regulate alternator excitation. The ECM monitors that field circuit and sets P0622 when the circuit response is faulty, which can leave alternator output poorly controlled and allow the battery to discharge.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Field circuit open or shorted
- Alternator regulator fault
Symptoms
- Charging-system warning light may illuminate
- Battery may discharge if the generator field is not controlled correctly
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check for related generator or battery-voltage codes before clearing anything.
- Inspect the alternator F-terminal connector and nearby harness for corrosion, loose pins, chafing, or heat damage.
- Check battery terminals and engine grounds for poor connections that can interfere with field control.
- Observe commanded generator field and charging voltage in live data while the engine is running, if supported.
- Test the F-terminal wiring for opens and shorts, then check the regulator and field response against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure the F-terminal connector and battery connections.
- Repair damaged or shorted field-control wiring.
- Restore a poor engine or alternator ground.
- Replace the alternator regulator or alternator if tests identify an internal field-control failure.
Can I keep driving?
If charging is weak or the charging warning light is on, avoid extended driving and reduce electrical loads because the battery may run down and the engine can stall. Arrange a charging-system check promptly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
