OBD-II fault code

P061E: Internal Control Module Brake Signal Performance

What it means

An internal self-test in the control module reports a fault in its processing of the "brake signal" value. The module computes and cross-checks this value redundantly inside its own processor; when the results disagree, the code sets. It points to a hardware or software fault inside the module itself, not to a defect of the external sensor. Causes are an internal processor or memory fault, corrupted control-module software, or low or disturbed module supply voltage.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The control module processes the brake signal used to recognize when the driver is braking and checks that processing internally. P061E sets when its internal brake-signal checks disagree; the code alone does not establish that the brake switch or brake system has failed.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Low or unstable control-module power or ground
  2. Poor module connector contact or damaged wiring
  3. Control-module software or calibration fault
  4. Internal control-module hardware fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Possible limp mode or no-start
  • Multiple follow-up faults across modules
  • Reset/relearn may be needed after repair

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and scan all modules for brake-signal, voltage, and communication faults.
  2. With the vehicle stationary, check whether the brake lamps operate consistently when the pedal is pressed and released.
  3. Inspect the control module's power, ground, connector pins, and harness for loose, corroded, or damaged connections.
  4. Compare scan-tool brake-switch status with pedal operation and follow the manufacturer's procedure to check the signal path.
  5. Check for applicable software updates and use the manufacturer's tests to determine whether the control module has an internal fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair poor module power or ground connections.
  • Repair damaged or corroded wiring or connector pins affecting the brake signal.
  • Replace or adjust a brake switch only if testing shows its signal is faulty.
  • Reflash the control module if an applicable update is specified.
  • Replace the module only if its internal brake-signal processing fault is confirmed.

Can I keep driving?

Check the brake lamps before driving. If they do not work reliably, or braking behavior changes, do not drive the vehicle until the fault is diagnosed; otherwise, limit driving and watch for abnormal engine response when braking.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
