OBD-II fault code

P05EF: Reductant Pump Supply Voltage Circuit Low

What it means

Same as P05EE with the supply voltage below the plausible range. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The reductant pump supply circuit powers the pump that delivers DEF/AdBlue for exhaust dosing. The control module monitors that supply and sets P05EF when its voltage is lower than the plausible range. The low reading can come from excessive resistance or a short in the supply path; it does not by itself identify a failed pump.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Supply voltage low
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or emissions warning may illuminate

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live supply-voltage data while the pump is commanded, noting whether the low reading is steady or intermittent.
  2. Inspect the pump supply harness for chafing, crushed sections, water intrusion, and damaged connector seals, then check terminals for corrosion or pin push-back.
  3. Check the pump supply fuse and relay connections and confirm the vehicle battery voltage is stable during the event.
  4. Measure voltage at the pump and compare it with the module's reported supply reading while the pump is commanded on.
  5. Perform loaded voltage-drop checks across the supply and ground path, then isolate any high-resistance connection or short using the wiring diagram.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose terminals at the pump or relay connectors.
  • Repair chafed or damaged supply wiring and restore connector seals that admit moisture.
  • Replace a defective relay or fuse connection after confirming the circuit is not overloaded.
  • Repair a confirmed module supply or monitoring fault if wiring and connections test correctly.

Can I keep driving?

Driving may be possible if the vehicle runs normally, but the low pump supply can interrupt DEF/AdBlue dosing and increase NOx emissions. Watch for a countdown or starting restriction, and avoid prolonged use until the supply fault is repaired.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
