OBD-II fault code

P05D3: Driver Mode Select Switch A Range or Performance

What it means

Same as P05D0 with the input in plausible range yet not matching the expected mode pattern - typically a worn switch or analog encoder drift.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Switch A provides the vehicle controller with a signal representing the driver's mode selection. P05D3 sets when that signal is electrically plausible but its values or changes do not match a valid mode-selection pattern.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Worn or drifting switch contacts
  2. Damaged or misaligned switch mechanism
  3. Fault in the switch signal wiring

Symptoms

  • Selected drive mode may not engage or may change unpredictably
  • A drive-mode warning or check-engine light may illuminate

How to diagnose it

  1. Check scan-tool live data for switch A while selecting each available mode and note any missing, unstable, or incorrect transitions.
  2. Inspect the switch A mechanism for looseness, damage, binding, or misalignment that could make selections inconsistent.
  3. Check its connector and wiring for poor contact or damage that could distort an otherwise in-range signal.
  4. Use the wiring diagram to measure switch A's signal changes while operating it and compare the pattern with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the signal pattern remains incorrect with sound wiring, test or replace switch A as directed by service information.

Common fixes

  • Re-seat or repair a loose switch A connector or damaged signal wiring.
  • Correct a misaligned or binding switch A mechanism where serviceable.
  • Replace switch A if its signal pattern drifts or fails the specified test.
  • Repair a confirmed controller input fault.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle is generally driveable if it responds normally, but the selected mode may fail to engage or change unexpectedly. Use a mode with predictable behavior and avoid relying on a specific setting until diagnosed.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
