What it means
Battery Monitor Module Temperature Monitoring Performance: the component is electrically intact but its response does not match the command. The module reports battery current, voltage and temperature for charge management.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The battery monitor module uses a temperature sensor to track battery temperature for charge management. This code sets when the reported temperature response is outside expected performance, so charging may be managed using an inaccurate temperature reading.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Battery temperature sensor fault or drift
- Loose, corroded, or damaged sensor connections
- Damaged wiring
- Battery-monitor module fault
Symptoms
- Battery or charging warning light may appear
- Start-stop system may be unavailable
- Charging behavior may change
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare the scan-tool battery-temperature reading with the battery's actual surroundings before starting a temperature-sensitive test.
- Inspect the battery temperature sensor and its mounting for damage, poor contact with the battery, or an incorrectly seated connection.
- Check the sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, looseness, chafing, or damaged terminals.
- Compare the temperature signal with the manufacturer's specification under the prescribed test conditions.
- If the sensor and wiring pass, follow the manufacturer's procedure to check the battery monitor module's temperature input.
Common fixes
- Secure the temperature sensor in its specified position and reconnect its plug.
- Clean or repair corroded or damaged sensor connector terminals.
- Repair damaged temperature-sensor wiring.
- Replace a temperature sensor that fails the manufacturer's checks.
- Replace the battery monitor module if its temperature input remains faulty after sensor and wiring checks.
Can I keep driving?
You can often drive if the battery and charging warnings are absent, but charging may be less accurately controlled and start-stop may be unavailable. If charging warnings appear or starting becomes unreliable, limit driving and have the battery system checked.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
