OBD-II fault code

P0582: Cruise Control Vacuum Control Circuit Open

What it means

The vacuum-control solenoid of a vacuum-driven cruise servo (older systems) has an open control circuit - the servo cannot pull the throttle.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

On vacuum-operated cruise systems, the vacuum-control solenoid lets the module apply vacuum to the servo that moves the throttle. P0582 sets when the solenoid's electrical control circuit is open, so the module cannot operate the servo as intended.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open in solenoid or harness
  2. Pin pushed back out of connector body
  3. Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor

Symptoms

  • Cruise control unavailable
  • Cruise control may disengage
  • Check-engine light

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and related cruise-control codes, then confirm whether the system is vacuum-operated before tracing a solenoid circuit.
  2. Inspect the vacuum-control solenoid connector and harness for a disconnected plug, corrosion, a pushed-back pin, or a broken wire.
  3. Check the solenoid coil and its wiring for an open circuit using the manufacturer's test procedure and specification.
  4. Check continuity through the control wire between the solenoid and module connectors, and inspect for an open at each terminal.
  5. If the circuit and solenoid test correctly, check the module's control output using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect and secure a loose solenoid connector.
  • Repair a broken or open wire in the vacuum-control circuit.
  • Replace damaged or pushed-back connector terminals.
  • Replace the vacuum-control solenoid if its coil is open.
  • Repair or replace the control module only after the solenoid and wiring pass their checks.

Can I keep driving?

The fault generally prevents cruise control from working, while normal accelerator control remains available. Drive without cruise control and be ready to manage speed manually.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
