OBD-II fault code

P056C: Cruise Control Cancel Signal

What it means

The cancel signal (driver-initiated cruise off) reports an implausible state - stuck, missing, or shorted.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The cruise-cancel input tells the cruise system to stop maintaining the set speed when the driver requests cancellation. The control module monitors the cancel signal and sets this code when it is stuck, missing, or shorted, which can prevent cancellation or cause cruise to disengage unexpectedly.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Cruise control cancel switch or stalk failed or stuck
  2. Brake or cancel switch wiring fault
  3. Loose or corroded connector
  4. Fault in the related control module

Symptoms

  • Cruise control may not cancel when commanded
  • Cruise control may disengage unexpectedly
  • Check-engine light may come on

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and monitor the cancel input on a scan tool while operating the cancel switch; check that the reported state changes as commanded.
  2. With the vehicle parked, verify whether the cancel control consistently disengages cruise when it is safe to test.
  3. Inspect the cancel switch or stalk and brake or cancel switch area for damage, sticking, or incorrect operation.
  4. Check the related connectors and wiring for corrosion, loose terminals, chafing, opens, or shorts.
  5. Test the cancel switch and signal circuit against the manufacturer's specification, then consider the related module if the switch and wiring pass.

Common fixes

  • Free or clean a sticking cancel switch or stalk where appropriate.
  • Reconnect or clean a loose or corroded connector.
  • Repair an open, shorted, or damaged cancel-signal wire.
  • Replace a failed cancel switch or stalk.
  • Repair or replace the related control module if testing confirms an internal fault.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid using cruise control until the cancel function works reliably; be ready to control speed with the accelerator and brake. If cruise will not cancel, use the brake to disengage it and have the fault checked before relying on the system again.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
