OBD-II fault code

P0543: Intake Air Heater A Circuit Open

What it means

The intake air heater (grid heater) on path A - used on cold-start of diesel engines to warm intake air for reliable combustion - has an open control circuit. Without it, cold-start emissions and idle quality on cold days suffer.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The intake air heater A, often a grid heater on diesel engines, warms incoming air to support combustion during cold starts. The control module monitors its control circuit and sets P0543 when it detects an open path, such as a broken wire, disconnected terminal, failed relay, or open heater element.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open in harness, relay or heater element
  2. Pin pushed back out of connector body
  3. Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Hard starting when the engine is cold
  • Rough running after a cold start

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check whether the code appeared during a cold start, when the heater is most likely to be commanded.
  2. Inspect the intake air heater A connector for a pushed-back pin and check the harness for breaks, loose connections, or heat damage.
  3. Check the heater A fuse and relay, if fitted, and confirm the connector is fully seated.
  4. With power isolated as specified by the manufacturer, test continuity through the heater element and its wiring to locate an open.
  5. If the harness, relay, and element test correctly, check the heater control module or sensor connections for an internal open or cracked joint.

Common fixes

  • Seat the connector properly or repair a pushed-back terminal.
  • Repair an open or damaged section of heater A wiring.
  • Replace a failed heater A relay or fuse after checking for the cause of failure.
  • Replace the open heater A element or repair the failed control module if testing confirms it.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may be drivable in mild weather, but cold starts can become difficult and the engine may run roughly until it warms. Avoid repeated long cranking, which can drain the battery and strain the starter.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
