What it means
During the cold-start strategy the ECU monitors exhaust temperature to ensure catalyst light-off. The measured EGT remains below the target threshold within the allowed time - heat-up strategy is not effective. Causes include excessive heat loss, very rich mixture cooling the exhaust, or a faulty EGT sensor.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
During cold-start warm-up, the engine control module monitors exhaust gas temperature to check that the catalyst is receiving enough heat to reach operating temperature. P050E sets when the measured exhaust temperature stays below the expected target for the allowed time, potentially due to excessive heat loss, a rich mixture, or a low-reading sensor.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Excessive heat loss between port and catalyst
- EGT sensor drifts low
Symptoms
- Check-engine light on
- Longer warm-up after a cold start
- Rough running or reduced power while cold
- Exhaust-related warning or emissions test failure
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and note coolant temperature, engine run time, exhaust temperature readings, and any mixture or misfire codes.
- Before starting a cold engine, compare the exhaust-temperature sensor reading with ambient conditions and other temperature readings for plausibility.
- Inspect the exhaust path between the engine and catalyst for leaks, damaged insulation, or missing heat shields that could increase heat loss.
- Check fuel-trim and misfire data during warm-up for evidence of an overly rich mixture or incomplete combustion.
- Test the EGT sensor and its wiring, then compare the signal with the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Repair an exhaust leak that is affecting temperature measurement or heat delivery.
- Restore damaged exhaust insulation or heat shielding where fitted.
- Repair the cause of an overly rich mixture or cold-start misfire if found.
- Repair EGT sensor wiring or replace a sensor that reads low outside specification.
Can I keep driving?
The vehicle may be drivable if it runs normally, but avoid repeated short trips while the catalyst takes longer to warm. If power drops, the engine runs roughly, or an exhaust warning appears, limit driving and have the fault checked.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
