What it means
The catalyst heater on bank 1 is electrically intact but does not deliver the expected thermal effect - measured catalyst light-off time is longer than calibrated. Heater element ageing, increased contact resistance, or a partial winding failure are typical causes.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The catalyst heater on bank 1 warms that bank's catalytic converter so it can begin treating exhaust soon after a cold start. The ECU monitors the heater's effect on catalyst warm-up, and sets P04FE when the circuit appears electrically intact but bank 1 takes longer than expected to reach operating temperature.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Heater element aged - reduced power output
- Increased contact resistance in supply
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Possible increase in cold-start emissions
How to diagnose it
- Use freeze-frame data to confirm the fault occurred during a cold start and note the starting temperature and warm-up conditions.
- Identify bank 1 using the vehicle's service information, then inspect its catalyst heater wiring and connectors for heat damage, corrosion, or loose contacts.
- Compare bank 1 heater operation and catalyst warm-up data with bank 2, if equipped, under similar cold-start conditions.
- Check heater supply connections for excessive contact resistance and voltage drop under the manufacturer's test conditions.
- If supply and connections are sound, test bank 1's heater element and thermal response against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Clean or repair poor contacts in the bank 1 heater supply connection.
- Repair damaged bank 1 heater wiring or connector terminals.
- Replace the bank 1 catalyst heater if its output or warm-up response is below specification.
Can I keep driving?
Normal driving is generally possible if there are no other symptoms, but avoid unnecessary cold-start trips until it is diagnosed. Bank 1 may produce higher emissions before its catalyst warms, which can lead to an emissions inspection failure.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
