What it means
Same as P04EA but on the fresh-air side - the path between vent valve and atmosphere is not sealing completely during the active test phase.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The EVAP system captures fuel vapor and uses a vent path that admits fresh air during normal operation. P04EB indicates that the monitor detected a small leak on the fresh-air side, so the vent-side path did not seal well enough during the leak test.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Vent valve does not seal in test mode
- Hose porous or cracked
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Possible smell of fuel near tank or engine bay
- Failed emissions inspection
- Loose-cap warning may appear
How to diagnose it
- Use freeze-frame data and EVAP monitor status to confirm the conditions under which the fresh-air-side leak was detected.
- Locate the fresh-air path and inspect its hose and connections for cracks, looseness, or damage.
- Check the vent valve and its sealing area for dirt, damage, or a valve that may not close during the leak test.
- Use an approved EVAP smoke or leak test to check the fresh-air hose, vent valve, and nearby connections for a small leak.
- Test vent-valve operation and sealing according to the manufacturer's procedure before replacing the valve.
Common fixes
- Reconnect a loose fresh-air-side hose.
- Replace a cracked or porous fresh-air hose.
- Clean or repair a vent valve's sealing surface if the manufacturer's procedure allows it.
- Replace the vent valve if it fails its sealing test.
Can I keep driving?
Driving is generally reasonable if the vehicle runs normally and there is no strong fuel odor, but the emissions monitor may fail inspection while this fault is active. If fuel odor becomes strong or a leak is visible, stop driving and address it promptly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
