OBD-II fault code

P04AF: EVAP System Purge Control Valve B Stuck Closed

What it means

Same as P04AE but the valve B is stuck closed - no vapor purge possible through this stage, leading to elevated tank pressure and possible canister saturation.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

EVAP purge control valve B opens to route canister vapor into the intake when purge is needed. P04AF sets when the module detects that valve B remains closed or fails to pass vapor when commanded open, preventing purge through this stage.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Valve stuck closed
  2. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
  3. Component wear with age - mechanical play

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Possible smell of fuel near tank or engine bay
  • Failed emissions inspection
  • Loose-cap warning may appear

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame and EVAP live data for purge valve B command and whether the system response indicates vapor flow.
  2. Inspect valve B's connector, wiring, and vapor hoses for disconnection, blockage, or damage that could prevent flow.
  3. Use available scan-tool output controls to command valve B open and verify whether the EVAP response changes.
  4. Test the valve B solenoid circuit and connector condition to confirm the valve is receiving the intended command.
  5. If the electrical command is sound, test valve B for mechanical sticking or blockage using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect a loose valve B electrical plug or vapor hose.
  • Clear a blocked hose or valve passage if the manufacturer's procedure allows it.
  • Repair wiring or connector faults preventing valve B from receiving its command.
  • Replace purge valve B if it remains mechanically stuck closed.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle is usually drivable if the engine runs normally, but a persistent fuel smell or refueling difficulty should be addressed promptly. Without purge through valve B, the EVAP system may fail emissions checks and canister performance may deteriorate.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
