What it means
Same as P049A but specifically with measured flow below the required rate - typically EGR valve sticking closed or cooler heavily clogged.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
EGR B routes exhaust gas back into the engine, and its valve and cooler control how much gas reaches the intake. The control module compares requested operation with flow feedback; P049B specifically means measured EGR B flow is below the required amount.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- EGR valve B sticking closed
- EGR cooler B heavily clogged with soot
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Pinging or knocking under load
- Power loss and hesitation
- Possible rough idle
- Failed emissions inspection (NOx)
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and compare commanded EGR B operation with flow and position feedback to confirm the low-flow event.
- Identify EGR B from the vehicle's service information and inspect its passages and cooler for heavy soot blockage or damage.
- Command EGR B with a scan tool and check whether the valve opens and its position feedback follows the command.
- Check the cooler and connecting passages for restriction using the manufacturer's inspection procedure.
- If the flow path and valve move freely, test the EGR B flow or position sensor and its wiring against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Clean soot from a confirmed obstructed EGR B passage.
- Clean or replace a heavily restricted EGR B cooler.
- Repair the EGR B connector or wiring if testing finds a fault.
- Replace an EGR B valve that sticks closed.
- Replace a sensor only when its output fails the specified test.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration if the engine pings, hesitates, or loses power; arrange diagnosis soon because low EGR B flow can increase NOx emissions and may cause a failed inspection. Stop driving if knocking becomes severe or the engine runs poorly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
