What it means
The control module detected excessive current in the cooling fan circuit. Possible causes include a failing fan motor, wiring fault, or fan-control module fault.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The control module monitors current drawn by the cooling fan circuit while the fan operates. P0484 sets when that current exceeds the system’s expected range, often because the motor is binding or wiring draws excessive current; the control system may shut the fan off to protect the circuit.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Fan motor seized
- Wiring short under load
- Fan module fault
Symptoms
- Cooling fan may stop working or operate erratically
- Engine temperature may rise, especially in slow traffic or at idle
- Air conditioning may cool poorly at a stop
- Engine temperature warning light may come on
How to diagnose it
- Use freeze-frame and live data to note coolant temperature, fan command, and whether the fault appears as the fan starts or changes speed.
- With the engine off, inspect the fan blades and shroud for debris or contact that could make the motor work harder.
- Check the fan wiring, connectors, fuse, and relay for melted insulation, overheated terminals, or a short to ground.
- Measure fan circuit current during an appropriate commanded operation and compare it with the manufacturer’s specification.
- If wiring is intact, test the motor for binding or excessive current draw, then check the fan control module if the motor passes.
Common fixes
- Remove debris or correct fan-to-shroud contact that is restricting rotation.
- Repair a shorted or heat-damaged section of fan wiring or connector.
- Replace a seized or excessive-current fan motor.
- Replace a faulty fan control module if circuit and motor tests identify it as the cause.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid idling and slow traffic if the fan stops or temperature begins to rise, and avoid using the A/C while cooling is impaired. Stop safely at a temperature warning; continued overheating can cause serious engine damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
