OBD-II fault code

P0439: Catalyst Heater Control Circuit (Bank 2)

What it means

The drive circuit for the heated catalyst on bank 2 is open. Heated catalysts use an electrical heating element to reach light-off temperature within seconds of cold start.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The Bank 2 heated catalyst uses an electrical element to warm the catalyst after a cold start. P0439 sets when the control module detects an open in the heater drive circuit, so the heater may not operate even if the catalyst itself is intact.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Heater element or wiring open
  2. Pin pushed back out of connector body
  3. Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Failed emissions inspection
  • Possibly slightly increased fuel consumption
  • Sulfur (rotten egg) smell from exhaust under load

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and heater command information, if available, to confirm the fault occurs when the Bank 2 catalyst heater is requested.
  2. Inspect the Bank 2 heater connector and harness for heat damage, broken conductors, corrosion, loose pins, or a pushed-back terminal.
  3. Check the heater supply, ground, and control wiring for an open using the manufacturer's wiring diagram and test procedure.
  4. Test the Bank 2 heater element for continuity against the manufacturer's specification and inspect its connector fit under load if specified.
  5. If the element and wiring pass, diagnose the heater driver at the control module according to the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or repair a loose or pushed-back Bank 2 heater connector terminal.
  • Repair an open or heat-damaged wire in the Bank 2 catalyst-heater circuit.
  • Replace the heater element or assembly if it tests open.
  • Repair a confirmed faulty heater driver or module connection.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle can usually be driven gently if it runs normally, but cold-start emissions may rise and inspection may fail. Avoid heavy load if there is a strong sulfur smell, and repair the open heater circuit to restore warm-up emissions control.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
