What it means
AIR switching valve A drive line stuck low — short to ground. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The secondary air injection system sends fresh air into the exhaust during conditions such as cold start, and switching valve A controls part of that airflow. The control module monitors valve A's electrical drive circuit and sets P041F when the circuit voltage stays below its expected range, commonly from a short to ground.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Short to ground
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Harness chafing through insulation
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Failed emissions inspection
- Possible roughness during cold start
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and command secondary air operation with a scan tool, if supported, to confirm when valve A's circuit goes low.
- Inspect valve A's connector and harness for water ingress, corrosion, pushed-back pins, or insulation chafed through to ground.
- With the code active or live data available, gently move the harness near valve A to look for a change that localizes an intermittent short.
- Test the valve A control wire for a short to ground and check connector terminal condition using the vehicle wiring information.
- Test valve A and its control circuit against the manufacturer's specification to determine whether the fault is in the wiring or valve.
Common fixes
- Repair wiring chafed through to ground near valve A.
- Clean or repair corroded or pushed-back connector terminals and restore the seal.
- Replace a damaged connector or harness section.
- Replace switching valve A if its circuit test fails and the wiring is sound.
Can I keep driving?
You can usually drive if the engine runs normally, but the vehicle may fail an emissions inspection and may run rough during cold starts. Arrange repair before an inspection or if cold-start drivability worsens.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
