What it means
The control module detected a short in the AIR system switching valve B circuit.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Switching valve B controls a secondary-air flow path during cold starts. The control module monitors the valve B circuit and sets P0417 when it detects a short in that circuit. The short can prevent the valve from switching and can compromise the AIR system's cold-start emissions routine.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Shorted switching valve B circuit wiring
- Switching valve B solenoid fault
- Damaged or corroded connector
- Control module driver fault
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Failed emissions inspection
- Possible roughness during cold start
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and related AIR codes to see when the valve B fault occurred and whether it is a recurring electrical problem.
- Inspect valve B wiring and its connector for pinched or melted insulation, corrosion, moisture, or terminals touching.
- Isolate the valve B solenoid from the harness as directed by service information to determine whether the short is in the valve or wiring.
- Test the valve B circuit for shorts to ground, power, or adjacent wires using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's procedure.
- If the valve and harness are sound, check the control module connector and driver for a shorted output.
Common fixes
- Repair chafed, pinched, or heat-damaged wiring in the valve B circuit.
- Clean or replace a connector with corroded or bridged terminals.
- Replace the valve B solenoid if it is internally shorted.
- Repair the control module driver circuit only after ruling out the valve and wiring.
Can I keep driving?
If the short blows fuses, heats wiring, or causes other electrical symptoms, stop driving until the circuit is checked; otherwise, normal driving may be possible with reduced cold-start emissions control. Prompt repair helps prevent damage to the circuit or control-module driver and avoids an emissions inspection failure.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
