OBD-II fault code

P0403: Exhaust Gas Recirculation A Control Circuit/Open

What it means

The control circuit for the EGR valve solenoid is open or shorted. The ECM cannot drive the valve to the commanded position.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The EGR A control circuit operates the solenoid that allows the module to command exhaust gas recirculation. P0403 sets when the module detects an electrical open or other circuit fault that prevents it from driving the solenoid as intended; this is a control-circuit fault, not proof that the valve passages are blocked.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. EGR solenoid winding defective
  2. Wiring or connector fault
  3. ECM driver stage damaged

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Pinging or knocking under load
  • Power loss and hesitation
  • Possible rough idle
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check for related EGR codes, then note whether the fault appears during a commanded solenoid operation.
  2. With the ignition off, inspect the EGR A solenoid connector and harness for loose pins, corrosion, breaks, or damaged insulation.
  3. Check solenoid winding continuity and compare the result with the manufacturer's specification.
  4. Test the control and power sides of the EGR A circuit for an open or short, following the manufacturer's wiring information.
  5. If the solenoid and wiring pass, test the module driver using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or repair loose, corroded, or damaged EGR A connector terminals.
  • Repair an open or shorted wire in the EGR A control circuit.
  • Replace the EGR solenoid if its winding fails the specified test.
  • Repair or replace a confirmed failed module driver.

Can I keep driving?

A vehicle with this code may still run, but EGR control can be lost, increasing emissions and sometimes causing pinging or hesitation under load. Avoid heavy loads if it knocks or loses power.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
