OBD-II fault code

P03EF: A Camshaft Profile Actuator C Control Performance/Stuck Off (Bank 1)

What it means

Cam profile actuator A position C is electrically OK but does not engage when commanded. The cam phaser actuator adjusts intake/exhaust timing under load — a stuck or slow phaser kills mid-rpm torque and can throw correlation codes between cam and crank.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The Bank 1 camshaft profile actuator A position C mechanism selects a cam profile when commanded by the engine control module. This code sets when the circuit appears electrically sound but the actuator fails to engage, pointing to restricted oil flow, sticking, or mechanical wear.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Lock pin or oil supply restricted
  2. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
  3. Component wear with age - mechanical play

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame and live data for the Bank 1 actuator A position C command and actual position to confirm it fails to move when requested.
  2. Check engine oil level and condition, since the oil supply may be needed to move the profile actuator.
  3. Inspect the position C solenoid and harness for loose connections or damage that could interrupt actuation despite normal circuit readings.
  4. Test the position C solenoid response and oil-control operation according to the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If electrical operation and oil supply are adequate, inspect the actuator, lock pin, and cam mechanism for debris, sticking, or wear.

Common fixes

  • Correct low or contaminated engine oil using the specified grade and service interval.
  • Repair a loose or damaged Bank 1 position C solenoid connection.
  • Clean or replace a sticking oil control valve if the manufacturer's procedure supports service.
  • Repair or replace a worn or binding cam profile actuator or lock pin after confirming the mechanical fault.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs smoothly, keep trips short and avoid heavy acceleration because the Bank 1 profile may not engage and power can drop. Stop if rough running or stalling develops.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
