OBD-II fault code

P03EB: A Camshaft Profile Actuator Position Sensor C Exceeded Learning Limit

What it means

The adaptive learning offset for camshaft profile actuator A position sensor C has reached its learning limit. Long-term mechanical wear of the cam profile lock pin or oil control valve.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Position sensor C provides feedback on the position of camshaft profile actuator A. This code sets when the engine control module has used all of its available learning correction for sensor C, often because actuator A is sticking or worn or the feedback is inaccurate.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Camshaft profile actuator A position sensor C fault
  2. Actuator or position sensor wiring or connector fault
  3. Camshaft profile actuator sticking or worn
  4. Low or contaminated engine oil affecting actuator operation

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Capture freeze-frame data and compare actuator A's commanded position with sensor C feedback to identify when the learning correction reaches its limit.
  2. Check oil level and condition, since the profile actuator depends on engine oil for proper movement.
  3. Inspect sensor C's connector and wiring for corrosion, backed-out pins, chafing, and oil contamination.
  4. Test sensor C's signal and circuit while moving actuator A through its operating range, using the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the electrical feedback is sound, check actuator A and its cam profile lock pin for sticking, wear, or excess play.

Common fixes

  • Correct low oil level or replace contaminated oil with the specified grade.
  • Repair damaged sensor C wiring or clean and secure its connector.
  • Replace position sensor C if its output does not meet the manufacturer's specification.
  • Repair or replace actuator A or its lock pin if testing confirms sticking or wear.

Can I keep driving?

Drive only as needed and keep engine load modest if it still runs smoothly; power can fall in the mid-range. Stop if it stalls or develops a persistent rough idle, as the profile actuator may not be moving correctly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
