What it means
A general electrical fault on knock sensor C — used on engines with multiple knock sensors (one per bank or per cylinder pair).
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Knock sensor C detects engine vibration on vehicles equipped with multiple knock sensors, and its signal helps the control module adjust ignition timing. P032A indicates a general electrical fault in sensor C's circuit; the code alone does not identify whether the sensor, connector, wiring, or control side is responsible.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor failed
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
- CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Reduced engine power or acceleration
- Engine knocking may be more noticeable
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and scan for other knock-sensor codes to establish when the sensor C circuit fault occurred and whether it is isolated.
- Use vehicle service information to locate knock sensor C, then inspect its connector and wiring for looseness, corrosion, heat damage, or chafing.
- Check the sensor C mounting and harness routing for damage or poor connections.
- Test sensor C wiring for opens, shorts, and poor continuity to the control module using the circuit diagram and manufacturer's procedure.
- Test knock sensor C and its circuit under the manufacturer's procedure to isolate the failed component.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose or corroded sensor C connector.
- Repair open, shorted, or chafed wiring in the sensor C circuit.
- Replace knock sensor C if it fails the manufacturer's test.
Can I keep driving?
Limit hard acceleration and heavy loads until the circuit is repaired because power may be reduced and the module may not respond normally to knock on sensor C's monitored area. Stop if you hear sustained engine pinging.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
