What it means
The knock-control subsystem reports an internal error — typically a self-test fault or a noise floor that cannot be calibrated. The system protects against detonation by retarding ignition; with this fault knock control is disabled.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The knock-control system listens for combustion vibration so the control module can adjust ignition timing to help prevent damaging detonation. This code indicates that the knock-control system has reported an internal or communication-related error, so its ability to detect knock and protect the engine may be reduced.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Internal knock-control fault
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
- CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Reduced engine power or acceleration
- Engine knocking may be more noticeable
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check live knock-control status and related fault codes to see whether the error is active and whether knock control is disabled.
- Inspect the knock-control system wiring and connectors, along with module communication connections, for damage, corrosion, or looseness.
- Check for other communication or module codes that could point to a network or gateway issue affecting knock-control messages.
- Use the manufacturer's scan and circuit tests to verify knock-sensor inputs and knock-control system self-test results.
- If wiring and sensor inputs pass, diagnose the reported control-system or communication fault using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair loose, damaged, or corroded knock-control wiring and connector terminals.
- Repair a confirmed communication wiring or gateway fault affecting knock-control messages.
- Replace a knock sensor only if testing shows its signal is faulty.
- Repair or replace a control module only after its internal fault is confirmed.
Can I keep driving?
Drive gently and avoid heavy loads or hard acceleration because knock control may not protect the engine normally, and sustained detonation can cause damage. If knocking becomes pronounced, reduce load and have the fault diagnosed promptly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
