What it means
CAC cooling fan control voltage above expected range. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The CAC fan control circuit carries the module's command to operate the fan that cools compressed intake air. P028E sets when the monitored control-circuit voltage is higher than expected, such as when the circuit is shorted to battery voltage.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wiring shorted to battery
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Supply wire pinched against B+ source
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Reduced engine power
- Higher intake-air temperature
- Possible engine protection warning
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to review freeze-frame data and CAC fan command and temperature readings to see when the high-circuit fault occurred.
- Inspect the CAC fan harness and connectors for insulation damage, moisture, corrosion, or terminals pushed back from the connector face.
- Trace the supply and control wiring for a pinch or rub point where it could contact a battery-positive source.
- Measure the control circuit as directed by the manufacturer's procedure and check for a short to battery voltage.
- If the harness and connections pass, test the fan control output and its power and ground circuits against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Repair wiring shorted to battery voltage and protect it from the contact point.
- Clean or replace corroded CAC fan connector terminals and damaged seals.
- Repair a pinched supply wire and secure the harness.
- Repair a faulty fan control output if circuit testing identifies it.
Can I keep driving?
The fan may not respond correctly to its command, allowing intake-air temperature to rise and potentially causing reduced power or an engine-protection warning. Avoid heavy loads and stop if that warning appears or power falls noticeably.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
