What it means
Thermostat does not regulate coolant temperature in the expected range. Often stuck open (slow warmup) or stuck closed (overheat).
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The engine coolant thermostat regulates flow between the engine and radiator so the engine reaches and maintains its intended temperature. P026F is set when the temperature changes the control module observes do not match expected thermostat behavior, such as warming too slowly or overheating.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Thermostat stuck open or closed
- Low coolant or air in the cooling system
- Coolant temperature sensor or wiring fault
- Restricted coolant flow
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Engine warms up slowly or runs too cool
- Engine overheating
- Heater output weaker than usual
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and live coolant temperature from a cold start to see whether the engine warms unusually slowly or temperature rises excessively.
- With the engine cool, check coolant level and inspect for leaks or signs of air in the cooling system.
- Compare the coolant temperature reading with ambient temperature before starting, and check sensor wiring and connectors if the reading is implausible.
- Observe whether the radiator or heater hoses warm in a pattern consistent with the thermostat opening; avoid touching hot hoses or opening a hot system.
- Inspect for restrictions in coolant hoses or other visible parts of the cooling circuit if temperature behavior remains abnormal.
- If sensor data and coolant level are credible, test thermostat operation and replace it if it does not regulate temperature as specified by the manufacturer.
Common fixes
- Correct low coolant and repair the source of any leak, then remove trapped air using the specified procedure.
- Repair a damaged coolant-temperature-sensor connector or wiring if its reading is inaccurate.
- Replace a thermostat that is stuck open or closed or otherwise fails the manufacturer's test.
- Repair a restricted hose or coolant-flow problem identified during inspection.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine is overheating, pull over safely and switch it off; driving while hot can cause severe engine damage. If it only warms slowly and the temperature remains stable, limit strenuous driving and arrange repair, since prolonged cool operation can increase fuel use and emissions.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
