What it means
Charge air cooler efficiency dropped below diagnostic threshold — intake air not cooled enough after compression. Risk of knock and loss of power.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The charge air cooler removes heat from compressed intake air before that air enters the engine; some vehicles use air-to-air cooling and others circulate coolant through the cooler. The control module compares temperature readings or other operating data to judge cooling performance, and sets this code when the charge air is not being cooled enough under the conditions it monitors.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Charge-air cooler core blocked or damaged
- Restricted airflow through cooler
- Coolant flow problem in a liquid-cooled system
- Faulty temperature sensor or wiring
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Reduced engine power
- Higher intake-air temperature
- Possible knock under load
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and live intake-air temperature readings to see whether the fault occurred under boost or at a particular load.
- Inspect the cooler core and its air path for blockage, debris, damaged fins, leaks, or restricted ducts.
- Check the charge-air hoses and connections for leaks or collapse that could distort the temperature and boost readings.
- On a liquid-cooled system, inspect coolant level, hoses, and circulation through the charge air cooler for leaks or restrictions.
- Compare the relevant temperature sensor readings with ambient and each other when appropriate, then check sensor wiring and cooler performance against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Remove debris or restrictions blocking airflow through the charge air cooler.
- Repair leaking, loose, or collapsed charge-air hoses and connections.
- Repair coolant leaks or restricted circulation in a liquid-cooled charge air system.
- Replace a damaged cooler core or a faulty temperature sensor after testing confirms the cause.
- Repair damaged sensor wiring or connector faults.
Can I keep driving?
You may be able to drive gently if power and engine temperature remain normal, but avoid heavy acceleration, towing, and sustained boost. Stop if knocking is pronounced or power drops substantially, since overheated intake air can increase knock risk and engine stress.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
