OBD-II fault code

P01F8: Engine Coolant Heater A Control Circuit Driver Current/Temperature Too High

What it means

The driver for engine coolant heater A has detected excessive current or temperature.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Engine coolant heater A is an electrically powered heater used to warm the coolant, commonly to help the engine warm up in cold conditions. The control module monitors the heater A driver and sets P01F8 when that driver detects current or temperature above its limit.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Shorted heater element or wiring
  2. Damaged or chafed harness
  3. Poor connector contact
  4. Fault in the heater control driver

Symptoms

  • Longer engine warm-up in cold conditions

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check whether the code appeared during cold-weather heater operation.
  2. With the system safely switched off, inspect heater A wiring and connectors for chafing, heat damage, corrosion, or loose contacts.
  3. Check the heater A element and its wiring for a short or abnormal current draw using the manufacturer's test procedure.
  4. Verify the heater A supply, ground, and control circuit against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the element and harness pass, diagnose the heater A control driver for an internal fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair chafed or shorted wiring to coolant heater A.
  • Clean and secure a poor heater A connector.
  • Replace a shorted coolant heater A element.
  • Repair or replace the faulty heater A control driver.

Can I keep driving?

The code alone usually does not prevent normal driving, but the engine may warm more slowly in cold weather, affecting cabin heat and emissions. Avoid touching or working on the heater circuit while it is energized, and address the fault before relying on it for cold starts.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
