OBD-II fault code

P01EC: Engine Coolant Heater B Control Circuit/Open

What it means

Engine Coolant Heater B Control Circuit/Open: the control circuit is open. Likely a broken wire, disconnected connector, or failed actuator.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Engine Coolant Heater B is an electrically controlled device that helps warm the engine coolant, typically in cold conditions. The control module monitors the electrical path to heater B and sets this code when it detects a break or loss of continuity in that path.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wiring break
  2. Pin pushed back out of connector body
  3. Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light or coolant-heater warning light
  • Longer engine warm-up in cold weather
  • Reduced cabin heat during warm-up

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and heater-related live data to see whether the fault occurred during a cold start or while heater B was commanded on.
  2. With the system switched off, inspect heater B's connector and harness for a disconnected plug, damaged insulation, or a wire break.
  3. Check that connector terminals are seated and making contact, looking particularly for a pushed-back pin or corrosion.
  4. Test continuity through heater B's control wiring and its relevant component connections using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the wiring and terminals are intact, check the heater control module for an internal connection or driver fault.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect and secure heater B's loose connector.
  • Repair a broken wire or damaged terminal in heater B's control circuit.
  • Replace a connector with a pushed-back or damaged pin.
  • Repair a confirmed cracked solder joint or failed control-module connection.

Can I keep driving?

Driving is generally possible, but in cold weather the engine may take longer to warm and cabin heat may be reduced. Avoid relying on the vehicle for quick defrosting until the heater works.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
