OBD-II fault code

P01D8: Cylinder 7 Injection Timing Performance - Over Advanced

What it means

Injection timing performance for cylinder 7 is more advanced than the expected range.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The engine control module compares the commanded injection timing for cylinder 7 with the injector's reported or inferred response. This code sets when cylinder 7's injection event is detected as earlier than the allowed range, which can result from an injector, its control circuit, or fuel delivery affecting its response.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Injector wear, sticking, or restricted flow
  2. Fault in cylinder 7 injector wiring or connector
  3. Injector driver or control circuit fault
  4. Fuel pressure or delivery problem affecting injector response

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Rough idle or vibration
  • Reduced power or uneven acceleration
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Record the freeze-frame data and review cylinder-specific timing or injector data to see when cylinder 7 went over advanced and whether the fault occurs at idle or under load.
  2. Inspect the cylinder 7 injector connector and harness for looseness, corrosion, chafing, heat damage, or signs of fuel leakage.
  3. Compare cylinder 7 injector operation and contribution with other cylinders using the scan-tool functions available for the vehicle.
  4. Check cylinder 7 injector wiring and control signals for opens, shorts, or poor connections using the manufacturer's test procedure.
  5. If wiring checks pass, assess the injector for sticking, wear, or restricted flow and check fuel pressure and delivery against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged cylinder 7 injector connector or wiring.
  • Restore fuel delivery if pressure or supply is outside the manufacturer's specification.
  • Clean or replace a restricted or sticking cylinder 7 injector as appropriate.
  • Repair the cylinder 7 injector driver or control circuit if testing identifies a fault.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs smoothly and the warning light is steady, limit driving and avoid heavy loads until diagnosed. Stop driving if it runs roughly, loses substantial power, or the warning light flashes, since continued misfiring or incorrect fueling can damage the exhaust after-treatment system.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
