What it means
Air filter on the EVAP leak detection pump module is restricted. Leak detection cannot establish reference pressure.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The EVAP leak detection pump draws air through its module air filter to establish a reference pressure for checking the fuel-vapour system for leaks. This code sets when restricted or obstructed airflow prevents the pump from establishing that reference.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- EVAP pump module air filter clogged with dust or debris
- Filter or its inlet obstructed
- Damaged or incorrectly fitted filter
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Possible smell of fuel near tank or engine bay
- Failed emissions inspection
- Loose-cap warning may appear
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and scan-tool EVAP test results for a failed reference-pressure or pump test.
- Inspect the leak detection pump module’s air-filter inlet for dirt, debris, blockage, or a disconnected intake path.
- Check that the filter is correctly fitted and not damaged, wet, or collapsed.
- Inspect the module and nearby EVAP hoses for damage or disconnection, especially if there is a fuel smell.
- If the inlet and filter are clear, follow the vehicle’s service information to check pump operation and related EVAP passages.
Common fixes
- Clear debris or obstruction from the pump module air-filter inlet.
- Clean the filter if the manufacturer permits cleaning; otherwise replace the restricted filter.
- Refit or replace a damaged or incorrectly installed filter.
- Repair damaged or disconnected EVAP hoses or pump-module connections found during inspection.
Can I keep driving?
You can usually drive if the vehicle runs normally, but arrange repair because the EVAP system may fail an emissions inspection and the fault can prevent leak checks. If you smell strong fuel vapour, stop and investigate safely rather than continuing to drive.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
