What it means
Fuel composition (e.g. ethanol fraction on flex-fuel vehicles) outside expected range. Wrong fuel filled or sensor fault.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
A fuel composition sensor estimates the blend of fuels, such as the ethanol fraction in a flex-fuel vehicle, and reports it to the engine control module. P0169 sets when the reported composition is outside the expected range or does not agree with what the module can plausibly use for fueling.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Fuel composition sensor giving an incorrect reading
- Fuel contamination or an unexpected fuel blend
- Damaged sensor wiring or connector
- Incorrect fuel for the vehicle’s fuel system
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Hard starting or rough running
- Reduced engine performance
- Poor fuel economy
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and any available fuel composition reading, then compare it with the fuel actually put in the tank and the vehicle's approved fuel types.
- Check whether the code appeared soon after refueling and consider whether the fuel may be contaminated or an unexpected blend.
- Inspect the composition sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, looseness, damage, or poor contact.
- View the sensor's live composition data and check whether it changes plausibly as the engine runs.
- Test the sensor and its circuit according to the manufacturer's specification before replacing the sensor.
Common fixes
- Correct an incompatible fuel choice by using the fuel specified for the vehicle.
- Repair damaged wiring or clean and secure a poor sensor connector.
- Address confirmed contaminated fuel by having the tank and fuel system handled appropriately.
- Replace a fuel composition sensor that fails circuit or plausibility testing.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs smoothly, a short, gentle drive is generally reasonable, but avoid heavy acceleration until the fuel blend reading is reliable. Rough running or hard starting can worsen and increase emissions, so address the fault promptly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
