OBD-II fault code

P015A: O2 Sensor Delayed Response - Rich to Lean Bank 1 Sensor 1

What it means

Pre-cat O2 sensor on bank 1 reacts only after delay when mixture switches rich to lean. A drifted or sluggish lambda sensor lets the mixture run lean or rich without correction — fuel economy and emissions suffer immediately.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Bank 1 sensor 1 is the upstream oxygen sensor before the catalytic converter on bank 1, and it reports exhaust oxygen so the ECU can adjust fuel delivery. P015A sets when that sensor takes too long to register a change from rich exhaust to lean exhaust, delaying the ECU’s correction.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Oxygen sensor aged or sluggish
  2. Sensor contaminated by oil, coolant, or fuel
  3. Exhaust leak near the sensor
  4. Sensor wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Possible rough idle or hesitation
  • Failed emissions test

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and monitor bank 1 sensor 1 live data during a warm operating condition, comparing its rich-to-lean transition with bank 2 sensor 1.
  2. Inspect the bank 1 upstream sensor connector and wiring for loose terminals, corrosion, heat damage, or chafing.
  3. Check for an exhaust leak near bank 1 sensor 1 and review bank 1 fuel trims and misfire data for causes of abnormal mixture changes.
  4. Look for signs of oil, coolant, or fuel contamination that could have damaged the upstream bank 1 sensor.
  5. Test the sensor signal and heater circuit using the wiring diagram and manufacturer’s specification, then replace bank 1 sensor 1 if it remains slow.

Common fixes

  • Repair an exhaust leak near bank 1 sensor 1.
  • Clean and secure the upstream sensor connector or repair damaged wiring.
  • Address an engine fluid leak or fuel problem contaminating the sensor.
  • Replace bank 1 sensor 1 if its rich-to-lean response is still slow after circuit and mixture checks.

Can I keep driving?

A steady light generally permits a short, gentle drive, but delayed upstream feedback can worsen fuel economy and emissions. Avoid hard driving and stop if the engine runs severely rough or the light flashes.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
