What it means
Injection timing deviates from target. Often caused by chain wear, sensor offset, or injector response drift.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
P0149 indicates that fuel injection timing differs from the target timing monitored by the engine module. The module compares timing control with crankshaft and camshaft position information; actuator, sensor, wiring, or mechanical timing faults can cause the mismatch.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Fuel injection timing control or actuator fault
- Crankshaft or camshaft position sensor fault
- Wiring or connector problem
- Mechanical timing issue
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Hard starting
- Rough running or knocking
- Loss of power
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check for related crankshaft, camshaft, injection-control, and fuel-pressure codes before clearing anything.
- Inspect crankshaft and camshaft sensor connectors and wiring for damage, oil contamination, corrosion, or loose terminals.
- Use a scan tool to compare commanded and reported injection timing along with engine-speed and camshaft-position data under the recorded conditions.
- Test the timing sensors and injection timing control circuit using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
- If electrical checks pass, inspect the mechanical timing components and actuator operation according to vehicle service information.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged crankshaft, camshaft, or timing-control wiring and connectors.
- Replace a crankshaft or camshaft position sensor confirmed faulty by testing.
- Repair or replace a failed injection timing actuator or control component.
- Correct a mechanical timing problem, such as worn or misaligned timing components, after inspection.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving farther than needed for diagnosis because incorrect injection timing can cause hard starting, power loss, rough running, or knocking and may lead to engine damage. Stop if knocking is pronounced, the engine stalls, or power drops sharply.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
