OBD-II fault code

P012E: Turbocharger/Supercharger Inlet Pressure Sensor A Circuit Intermittent/Erratic (Downstream of Throttle Valve)

What it means

The module detects an intermittent or erratic signal from the turbocharger or supercharger inlet pressure sensor A circuit, downstream of the throttle valve.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Sensor A measures pressure in the turbocharger or supercharger inlet passage after the throttle valve. The control module monitors whether its electrical signal remains stable as the vehicle operates. P012E sets when that signal drops out or changes erratically, often because vibration disrupts a connector or damaged section of wiring.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Connector loose or corroded
  2. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
  3. Harness routed against vibrating component

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live sensor A pressure for sudden jumps or dropouts, noting the engine speed and road conditions when they occur.
  2. Inspect sensor A's connector for looseness, corrosion, or pins that may lose contact when the vehicle vibrates.
  3. Follow the sensor A harness and look for chafing, stretched wiring, or contact with vibrating or moving components.
  4. With the vehicle wiring diagram, check the sensor A supply, ground, and signal circuit for intermittent opens or shorts while carefully moving the harness.
  5. If the circuit remains stable during these checks, test sensor A for erratic output and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose sensor A connector and ensure its terminals make firm contact.
  • Repair chafed or damaged wiring and secure the harness away from vibration or rubbing.
  • Clean or repair corroded connector terminals.
  • Replace sensor A if it produces intermittent output despite a stable supply, ground, and signal path.

Can I keep driving?

With only the check-engine light reported, cautious driving may be possible, but avoid hard acceleration if the signal drops out during driving. Intermittent pressure data can make engine control less reliable and the fault may become more frequent.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
